• Happy New Year from OHI

It’s been another amazing year of healing, kindness and joy at OHI, and we want to thank each and every one of you for playing such a valuable role in our community and making 2016 such a magical year . It wasn’t the easiest year for everyone, but thanks to the loving spirit of the OHI community, we were able to do our part in bringing just a little more compassion and healing into the world.

And we have big plans for 2017! To build on our success in 2016, we’ve set our sights on some major upgrades to our facilities to help us keep our mission rolling on into the new year and beyond.

Being a faith-based organization, one of our primary goals is to make our program as accessible as possible to those in need of healing. OHI was designed as a place where everyone could come to cleanse, rejuvenate body, mind and spirit, and heal—regardless of their station in life. That’s why keeping our pricing as low as possible is so very important to us. To this end, we created the Facility Improvement Fund in order to raise the money required to make necessary updates and repairs without having to raise prices for our members.

We anticipate raising more than $1.2 million over the next three years. Our campuses in Austin and San Diego are going to see some welcome improvements in the months and years to come. From technology improvements in our classrooms, to new flooring, lighting and furnishings in our common areas, to fresh landscaping and upgrades to our guest rooms and bathrooms, you’re going to love what we’ve done with the place the next time you pay us a visit. And we are overjoyed to be able to provide these upgrades while still keeping prices low for our members.

Even with our sights set on facility improvements, what remains at the core of OHI is our mission to help others live their very best life, whether it be improving their physical health, finding and pursuing their purpose or drawing closer to their spiritual self. Our 40-year-old, tried and true program is what has allowed us to continue this mission. So while you may see some changes around campus during your next retreat at OHI San Diego or Austin, you can rest assured that you’ll always find a compassionate-healing community and a holistic program that will help change your life for the better.

Happy New Year from all of us at OHI. We hope to see you soon! Visit our website www.optimumhealth.org and call us at (800) 588-0809 to make a reservation

  • Setting Goals for the New Year

Last week we talked about setting a vision for the New Year. With only a few weeks left in 2016, your vision should be coming into sharper focus right about now. One way to give your vision a clearer shape and structure is to begin setting some specific goals.

A Quick Refresh on Vision vs. Goals

Like an overarching theme for your ideal life, your vision is the ‘big picture’ idea of how you want to live, be and thrive in the world. Goals , on the other hand, are the concrete stepping stones that will help you achieve and maintain your overall vision.

Setting Goals to Realize Your Vision

At OHI, we emphasize the importance of setting and holding a vision for ourselves, with the belief that through clear-minded focus, positivity and dedication, we can manifest our best selves and bring our visions to life. And goals are a crucial aspect of this process. A retreat at OHI can help you make a clear plan for achieving your vision by helping you to set the right goals. Here are a few tips on how to get started

    • Be Specific – Remember that while your vision can be somewhat broad and nebulous, your goals should be clearly defined. For instance, if shedding a few pounds is part of your overall vision for health, your goal should be more specific than to simply “lose weight.” Find a concrete number and set a concrete target date (e.g. lose 5lbs by March) and get started. The more specific your goals, the better your chance of sticking to your vision and achieving what you’re after.
    • Be Realistic – One common pitfall when setting goals is to aim too high. That’s not to say you shouldn’t be ambitious with your vision, but goals are meant to be achievable markers of progress. They are a means of attaining your vision, not ends in and of themselves. So it’s important to set realistic goals. Sticking with the weight-loss example: say your overall target is to drop 60lbs. If you set that as your goal, you are likely to become discouraged when you fail to see noticeable progress right away. But if you breaking that up into smaller, more realistic intervals (say, 3lbs per month) you’ll be much more likely to succeed.
    • Visualize – At OHI, we like to encourage our guests to bring their visions and goals to life by giving them a physical presence in the world. In our vision board class, we use images, photos and words to create visual representations of our visions in the hopes that doing so will foster a more visceral emotional connection. When it comes to your goals, anything you can do to make them more concrete will help. Try writing them down and/or keeping a journal as you go to help reinforce your positive progress.

One key thing to remember is to be true to your vision. When setting a new goal, you might want to ask yourself, “how does this goal serve my overall vision for a happier healthier me?” This will help keep you from straying too far from your original plan and keep your goals grounded in the clarity and positivity that inspired your vision in the first place. It’s ok to expand your vision and add new goals, but it’s important not to overwhelm yourself, or spread yourself too thin.

The best way to make sure you have a great 2017 is to start off the year focused on your physical, mental and emotional health. • Setting a Vision for the New Year

The New Year is just around the corner, and with it comes new possibilities, unknown opportunities and exciting new prospects . It is a time for renewal. It’s a fresh start with boundless potential. Which means it’s the perfect time to check in with ourselves, discover what we truly want out of life, and set a vision for the future. But sometimes that’s easier said than done.

    What is a “vision” exactly?

Much more than a set of goals, or a New Year’s resolution, a vision is an overarching and all-encompassing conceptualization of your ideal self and ideal life.

    Vision vs. Goals

Vision – Your vision is like your mission statement. It’s a ‘big picture’ idea of how you want your life to look. Your vision could be greater health, more financial abundance, stronger relationships with your family and loved ones, or just more joy and love in general.

Goals – It might help to think of goals as smaller, more easily digestible pieces of your overall vision. Goals are clearly defined targets that exist within your greater vision and guide you closer to your ideal life.

For instance, if your vision includes improving your health, your first goal might be to lose 5lbs., quit smoking, or change your diet. If your vision includes greater wealth, you might set a goal to pay off that credit card debt, or start your own business. If your vision includes improving your relationships, your goals might include forgiving an old grievance, or simply communicating more with those you care about.

    How to Set Your Vision

When people leave OHI, one of the most valuable things we want them to take away from their experience is a renewed and strengthened vision for their lives. This happens in a variety of different ways. Here are a few of the steps you can take:

    • Meditation – A cluttered mind is perhaps the primary obstacle to overcome when crafting a solid vision for yourself. Holding and sticking to your vision requires focus. That’s why meditation is such a crucial part of the OHI experience. Consistent meditation helps to release pain and pent-up tension, and helps you to tap into your sub-consciousness by clearing away the muck and frustration that builds up over time.
    • Acceptance – The many physical, emotional and mental struggles we encounter in life can sometimes hamper our ability to stay positive. But, through consistent practice, and purposeful dedication to self-acceptance, you can learn to maintain the positive mental attitude needed to push toward your vision for a healthier happier you.
    • Visualization – One of the ways we try to bring our visions to life at OHI is with our vision board class. This gives guests the opportunity to tap into their creativity by building physical representations of their overall visions. By combining images and photographs with words and phrases that connect our visions to concrete things in the real world, we charge our visions with feelings of passion, and begin to attract those things into our lives.

An OHI retreat can be an eye-opening first step toward making your vision a reality, but that’s not to say you shouldn’t get started on your own. The important thing to remember is to clear your mind, focus on a positive mental attitude and set your vision before setting your goals, because if your goals don’t serve a greater purpose, you are much less likely to achieve them.

There’s no better way to start off the New Year than by taking time for yourself to create a clear vision for the life you want to lead in 2017. A retreat to OHI’s holistic health missions in San Diego and Austin, Texas allow you to step back from the stresses of daily life and re-focus on what is important to you. • The Holiday Spirit is Alive at OHI

OHI is always a special place, but during the holiday season it gets an extra touch of warmth and cheer . The campuses in Austin and San Diego are brought to joyful life with festive poinsettias, towering Christmas trees, thousands of twinkling white lights, and countless inviting reminders of the love, compassion and fellowship that make the holidays such a wonderful time of year.

In much of the country, the holiday season has become a time of stress and aggravation, rather than a time of relaxation and reflection. From the overwhelming emphasis on commercialism, the hassles of holiday travel, and perhaps uncomfortable family gatherings, the true spirit of this magical season can get lost in the fray. But at OHI, it is still very much alive and well—and not just because of the festive decorations.

The holidays are a time for connection, generosity and warmhearted compassion. And that’s exactly what the OHI experience is all about. It’s a place to get away from the commercialism and stress that now drive and underlie the contemporary holiday experience. It’s a place to truly reflect on what it means to love oneself and our fellow human beings. And it’s a place to heal, rejuvenate and revive body, mind and spirit in an environment of love and acceptance.

Perhaps that’s why so many members of the OHI community choose to return for the holidays year in and year out. In fact, roughly 75 percent of OHI’s guests during Christmas time are returning members of the OHI community.

People return to OHI for a number of different reasons. But whether they are suffering from life-threatening health issues, or simply looking for a place to calm the mind and cleanse the body, they all find the same warmth, gratitude and spiritual fortification that makes OHI the perfect retreat from the pressures of the hectic holiday season.

OHI offers a holiday experience that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity to detoxify your body with clean, healthy and delicious holiday meals, while learning to quiet your mind through meditation and nourish your spirit with honest reflection, prayer and generous sharing with your fellow OHI community members. If you’re looking for a place that truly captures the spirit of the holidays, inside and out, this is it.

You’ll be able to boost your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health with a holiday stay at the Optimum Health Institute (OHI). In beautifully landscaped settings designed to promote feelings of serenity, contentment and renewal, our missions in San Diego and Austin, Texas, will share the tools to help you achieve and maintain optimal health.
