Keeping Your Resolutions for Body, Mind and Spirit

Another New Year, and another opportunity to rededicate yourself to a happier, healthier, optimum life. Discover the support you require to reach your goals by meditating on the Optimum Health Institute (OHI) 5 P’s:

Purpose: Each resolution you make addresses specific things you desire to bring into balance. Focusing on the true purpose and desired result of each of those intentions will help you stay on the path to achieving them.

Positive Mental Attitude: See yourself having already achieved each resolution. Create a vision board to help you get into the emotional space of success. When you have faith you can make positive, practical changes in your behavior, you are empowered to do so. Truly believing you can accomplish your resolution is a major part of achieving your goal.

Persistence: Those well-worn neurological pathways you wore into your brain don’t just disappear in three weeks. Persistently sticking with a more positive alternative behavior, however, will definitely increase your chances of keeping those resolutions. Instead of buying junk food, for instance, take a quick stroll around the block. Appreciating the beauty of nature with each step will nourish your spirit while you’re honoring your body.

Patience: Accept that good things worth having take time. Be patient with yourself; anticipate there will probably be a few missteps on your path to positive change. Don’t dwell on them, but forgive yourself, and get back in step. Practice the “better than” exercise you learned at OHI to make improvements in gradual steps instead of thinking it has to be 100% or nothing. Take the time. Be patient. That’s how you get results that last.

Prayer: When you humbly ask for divine assistance in making positive changes in your life, you will receive loving guidance. Tapping into the power and grace of God through frequent prayer throughout your day will be a constant reminder you’re being blessed and supported on your path to optimum health.

‘Tis the Season of Generosity and Gratitude

Your generosity through OHI’s 41 Years of Holistic Healing has created miracles. What began in 1976 when we opened our doors as some guests privately helping others finance their stay quickly grew into the Optimum Health Institute Scholarship Fund. Thanks to you, so far this year alone we’ve able to award 91 scholarships, allowing guests in need to complete the entire 21-day God-centered holistic healing program and transform their bodies, minds and spirits.

There are just as many inspiring stories of faith, hope and healing as there are scholarship recipients.

There’s the story of the woman who underwent surgery for renal cell carcinoma. She and her husband had also just lost their jobs, so she could only afford the first week’s tuition. Because of your generosity, she completed all three weeks, reclaimed her health and energy, and was ready to get on with a happier, healthier life.

One woman‘s recent surgical wound refused to heal, and she was overwhelmed with staggering medical bills. She heard about OHI and felt it was her only hope. With just enough savings to cover the first week, she committed herself to rigorously following all the guidelines, from strict adherence to the plant-based diet to attending all the classes to enthusiastically participating in the daily stretching and walks. Receiving the other two weeks through the OHI Scholarship Fund was literally a life-saver for her. She left OHI feeling great, and embracing a new optimism and sense of purpose.

Extensive dental surgery depleted another woman’s energy and bank accounts in equal measure. She was left in constant pain, and owning only her car and her clothes. Her mother gifted her with tuition for the first week at OHI, and everything immediately began to change for the better. Basking in the support and compassion of OHI’s facilitators, missionaries and other guests, the woman immediately improved. She was ecstatic to complete the 21-day program thanks to an OHI scholarship and now, years later, is still eating 90% raw and feeling healthier and more empowered than ever.

Healing can take many forms. Sometimes, it’s about living life to the fullest, with grace and dignity to the very end.

One unforgettable OHI Scholarship Fund recipient was an 80-years-young gentleman diagnosed with liver and lung cancers, and given two months to live. It wasn’t fear of death that brought him to OHI, but rather a passionate desire to hang on long enough for one more river rafting trip with his beloved wife. The two had traversed all the major rivers in the country with the exception of the Mississippi. Completing all three weeks of the holistic healing program gave the man the energy and time he needed to enjoy that beautiful rafting trip, and also make months of many more joyful memories for his entire family. Your generosity allowed him to accomplish everything he wanted to do and more, and depart this world in peace and gratitude.

In this season of compassionate giving, please consider helping to make more miracles happen through a generous contribution to the OHI Scholarship Fund. Find out more at http://www.optimumhealth.org/reservations/ohi-scholarship-program.htm.

Healthy Ways to Amp Up Energy During the Holidays

The parties! The reunions with family and friends! The feasting! The traveling! Navigating the holidays while maintaining optimum energy and health takes a little extra planning, but you’ll know it’s worth the effort as you sail through the season balanced in body, mind and spirit.

First, pay attention to your physical needs. Be mindful of the basic energy boosters – staying hydrated, and getting at least 7 or 8 hours of deep sleep every night. Keep some nourishing snacks with you to power you through demanding days. You can whip up a big batch of healthy trail mix in advance by dehydrating almonds and organic fruit, then storing the mix in an air-tight container. Nibble on that when you feel your energy start to ebb.

Dark leafy greens, frozen berries and almond milk smoothies are perfect for a power-packed breakfast or a satisfying between-meal treat to keep you going.

A positive, happy attitude is essential for keeping your energy up. The quickest fix for a mental slump is several deep, conscious breaths. Bright colors also immediately brighten your mood, so wearing or decorating with brilliant reds, yellows and greens will boost everyone’s spirits.

Introduce new traditions. For those family gatherings or parties with friends, make it a point to learn one new, interesting thing about as many people there as possible. Kicking off the conversation with something like, “Please tell me something positive about you that not many people know” can spark many fascinating discussions and enrich relationships.

On a spiritual level, simply being in the company of those you love is an automatic energy booster. Amp up the good feelings by suggesting an opportunity to do something kind for others – find a place to volunteer, write a thankyou note to a favorite teacher or mentor, or drop off healthy food at a homeless shelter.

Staying in gratitude throughout the season also boosts your energy on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels.

Beating the Holidays Blues

It can be the best of times; it can be the worst of times. For most of us, the holidays are infused with high expectations, and gathering with family and friends can be both exciting and daunting. The secret to beating the holidays blues is planning ahead, and making the smart choices you know are most in alignment with keeping a healthy balance in body, mind, emotions and spirit.

An instant and effective way to get, and stay, in balance is remembering the healing clarity of conscious breathing. A deep, slow, mindful inhale, holding the breath, and thoroughly releasing it gently quiets the mind and lifts the spirits. Here are some other practical tips for getting, and staying, in the holiday spirit:

Drink your water!! A demanding schedule this time of year could keep you dashing from one obligation to another, and you might forget to stay hydrated. Muscle craps, foggy thinking, heart palpitations and fatigue are symptoms of dehydration that will definitely make you less than merry. Enjoying glasses of pure water throughout the day will help keep you going – and smiling.

Move it! Plan on doing a mix of both indoor and outdoor activities, solo and with family and friends, to reduce stress, pump up your energy, and get those feel-good chemicals circulating throughout your body. Whether you’re traveling or staying at home, find out about hiking trails in the area. Pump up the music and dance, and invite others to join you. Visit a gym. Initiate a game of touch football or tag with the kids. Walk the dog. Take a brisk stroll through the mall. No matter what the weather is, you can find lots of different ways to “get physical,” both indoors and outside.

Mother Nature has your back to help you beat the holiday blues. The fruits and vegetables in season during the late fall and early winter months are nutritional powerhouses, packed with the vitamins and nutrients you need to stay healthy and happy.

Oranges and other citrus fruits, of course, deliver high doses of vitamin C – the go-to vitamin for boosting the immune system and staving off colds and flu. It’s also touted for its anti-aging properties by helping prevent cardiovascular and eye diseases, and even skin wrinkling.

Don’t forget the other in-season vegetables – just half a cup of green bell pepper has a full day’s worth of vitamin C, and pumpkin, squash, and cabbage are also secret weapons for optimum health around the holidays. Since they’re in season, they will be higher in nutrients and taste fresher, too to boost both health and your spirits.

Countdown to Transformation

The beginning of a new year promises a fresh start and a clean slate. Most of us are eager to list all the positive new goals we have for our body, mind, and spirit in 2018. But statistics don’t lie. While the second week of January is the busiest time for new gym membership sign-ups, just four short weeks later, a very high percentage of those overly-optimistic members have already dropped out.

We didn’t instantly develop unhealthy habits, and we’re not going to instantly un-learn years or decades of less than optimum choices. Instead of falling into the trap of “all or nothing” New Year’s resolutions hoping for quick change, take the opportunity to start the groundwork that can make this the year you actually manifest positive change.

First, say psychologists, be more mindful. Dr. Bruce Lipton says up to 95% of the time your brain can be on ‘autopilot,’ just repeating habitual behaviors. When you make time daily to pray, meditate and journal, you are literally rewiring your brain. Just a few weeks of being more aware empowers you to change for the better.

The next step is doing some soul searching to find out why you adopted those non-beneficial behaviors in the first place. What need were you trying to meet, or what wound were you trying to heal, with junk food or parking yourself in front of a TV for hours every day? Only when you honestly confront your core emotions can you begin to understand and redirect them.

Journal. Write about your goals, and why you want to achieve them. Write about anything and everything standing in your way. Write down your promises to yourself, and frequently re-read everything you wrote.

Find a buddy to share the journey with you. Being able to talk about your dreams, your challenges and your opportunities with a supportive friend is essential for sticking with the program.

Fortunately, the ideal sacred space for all of this, and more, is ready and waiting for you. At Optimum Health Institute missions in San Diego and Austin, Texas, a two or three week extended stay this month delivers the unconditional support and all the resources you require to prepare to deliver on your New Year goals.

Sign up for an extended stay now to achieve a deeper level of detoxifying the body with live, raw, organic plant-based meal; enriching the mind with a full roster of classes, and celebrating the spirit with like-minded people, prayer and meditation. Confide in your missionary buddy and get the validation and encouragement you so need. Renew your commitment to walking your spiritual path with purpose, joy and optimum health. Delve deep in December to be ready for true, lasting transformation in the New Year.
